The UK is seeing a record number of young people seeking mental health support, with over half a million referrals to Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) by December 2023. This rise is attributed in part to the cost-of-living crisis, which particularly affects families with children experiencing mental health issues. Financial struggles lead to isolation, anxiety, and difficulties accessing basic needs like food and social activities.

Mental health charity Mind calls for comprehensive approaches to address young people’s mental health, including financial support for struggling households and the establishment of mental health hubs for early intervention. They urge the UK government to implement measures like an Essentials Guarantee for families on Universal Credit and invest in early support services to prevent crises and alleviate growing mental health challenges among young people.
